The Ph.D. Program in Accounting at USC trains researchers to investigate the variety of accounting issues. Accounting is broadly defined to include research into financial reporting, managerial accounting, auditing, taxation, and accounting information systems. The program emphasizes “rigor” in the theoretical and methodological approaches utilized by our Ph.D. students, and stresses the “relevance” of the accounting problems investigated.
In addition to having outstanding academic credentials, our students must exhibit a curiosity about accounting and its linkages with other disciplines. Graduating with a Ph.D. concentration in Accounting, our students receive a sound theoretical base and an understanding of practical applications of these theories. Students thoroughly understand research methods and philosophy of science, and are capable of publishing high-quality research and of teaching at prestigious universities.
To that end, our Ph.D. faculty provide a supportive educational environment and interact closely with the students. Our faculty enjoy the intellectual challenge of doctoral students, share their research expertise, and devote time and effort to doctoral education.
Accounting Research Forum (ARF)
The forum consists of discussions of research papers presented by faculty and Ph.D. students from USC and other institutions. Our students are expected to actively participate and attend these seminars. This interaction between faculty and doctoral students is crucial in developing an understanding of the academic environment and becoming comfortable with the intellectual interchange of ideas.
Student Financial Support
USC has made the financial commitment necessary to develop an outstanding Ph.D. program. Accounting students have access to support from the Marshall School of Business, the Leventhal School of Accounting, and sources outside the university.
Marshall School of Business
All admitted applicants are automatically given a USC Graduate Assistantship. This award covers full tuition plus a highly competitive stipend. Specific tuition and stipend information is available from the Ph.D. Program Office. Students who are making satisfactory degree progress are guaranteed funding for four years. Assuming progress on the dissertation is satisfactory, students may also receive funding for the fifth year.
Leventhal School of Accounting
The Leventhal School of Accounting is committed to financially support Ph.D. students as the need arises. We provide support for travel, supplies and dissertation research support throughout the program. Specific requests for travel and research support are made through the Program Director and subject to availability and dollar limitations consistent with the Marshall Ph.D. Program.
Outside Funding
Funding is available from a variety of outside organizations to assist the student in financing the Ph.D. program. These funding opportunities are competitive. Recently, our students have received funding from the AICPA, the Ernst & Young Foundation, the Deloitte & Touche Foundation, the American Society of Women Accountants Educational Foundation Laurels Fund, and others. In addition, the Leventhal School has some competitive awards for Ph.D., some of which involve monetary amounts.
